Care for the Family
National charity, Care for the family currently runs a six session parenting programme called How to Drug Proof Your Kids (DPYK) in which Ansvar plays an integral part by providing essential sponsorship for a scheme that provides vital drug and Alcohol education.
The programme aims to equip parents to relate effectively to their children and help them make informed and constructive choices about drugs and alcohol. It does this by addressing some of the potential and actual root causes of drug misuse such as communication breakdown and peer pressure. It is unique in that it is the only national preventative programme aimed at parents.
Care for the Family equips ordinary parents to lead the course in small groups in their local community, providing a valuable opportunity for parents to support one another.
Potential presenters of the programme attend a 2-day training course where they are given the skills and materials to deliver DPYK locally. They are provided with reference information, presenter’s manual, and audio-visual material on CD-rom, video and on-going support through free phone help lines. Presenters are accredited by Care for the Family after receipt of satisfactory references and completion of their training. All presenters commit to on-going evaluation of themselves and the programme.
DPKY was developed in Australia in 1999 and introduced to the UK by Care for the Family in 2003. It was re-written for the UK market in conjunction with Hope UK, a Christian drugs education charity.
