Employers Liability Tracing Office (ELTO)

ELTO is a new independent industry body which has been set up to make it easier for injured employees to trace their employer’s EL insurers where they are suffering from a disease or injury caused at work. Given the long-tail nature of EL insurance, sometimes by the time the claim arises, it can be difficult to determine who the EL insurers were.

At the heart of this process is a centralised database – the Employers’ Liability Database (ELD) which will contain all new and renewed EL insurance policies, old EL policies that have new claims against them and all successful traces from the current Tracing Service.

To date, around 90% (by market share) of the EL market have signed up to ELTO and members of ELTO will supply their existing data on their current EL book. From April 2012, some additional information will also be required, the Employer’s Reference Number (ERN) otherwise known as the Employer PAYE reference, will be needed as will information about subsidiaries.
