Coram
Coram acts every day to support the UK’s most vulnerable children, young people and their families.
Coram is one of the UK's oldest charities. It was established as a refuge for abandoned children by Captain Thomas Coram who in 1720. Coram was a philanthropist who wanted to provide care for children left dying on London’s streets. His campaign lasting 19 years finally caught the attention of King George II who, in 1739, gave Captain Coram a Royal Charter to create the Foundling Hospital. Captain Coram’s pioneering work further attracted some historically significant patrons including the artist William Hogarth and composer George Frideric Handel.
Today Coram continues to rely on the support of generous benefactors to ensure they can:
- Find loving, stable families for children in the greatest need through adoption
- Protect children and young people from being left to drift in the care system
- Support isolated young people in taking charge of their lives
- Give parents the confidence to do their best for their children
- Educate children in making responsible choices in life.
Life education is now also a part of Coram and together as ‘Coram Life Education’ they help over 800,000 children across the UK learn to make responsible life choices. By teaching them about diet, exercise and to manage the risks they may encounter, we help them take responsibility of their own lives.
To ensure their work is memorable and successful they use stimuli-rich and interactive techniques such as puppetry and role play, they teach children about the cause and effect of issues they may face as they grow up, including:
- Healthy eating
- Drugs and alcohol
- Forming positive friendships
- Valuing their self-worth.
All programs are delivered by specially trained educators to schools across the country in a fleet of mobile classrooms.
Parents and Teachers
Because of the critical role parents and teachers play in protecting children from encountering risky situations, Coram Life Education also work with schools, parents and local communities offering support and advice around subjects that can be difficult to address.
